The Best Glazed Orange Sweet Rolls

These are the best glazed orange sweet rolls filled with a buttery orange filling and topped with a simple glaze.

Ingredients
  

Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour or as needed
  • 0.25 cups granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons instant dry yeast one ¼-ounce packet, I use Red Star Platinum
  • pinch salt to taste
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter melted (1 stick)
  • 0.5 cups buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs lightly whisked

Filling

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter ¾ of 1 stick, very soft
  • 1 cup orange marmalade about
  • 0.5 cups light brown sugar packed

Orange Glaze

  • 0.25 cups orange juice
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract orange extract may be substituted
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • pinch salt optional and to taste
  • 3 tablespoons milk or cream or as needed for consistency
  • 3 teaspoons orange zest divided

Instructions
 

Make the Dough

  • Add 3 cups flour, sugar, yeast, and salt to a mixing bowl; set aside.
  • Melt the butter in a microwave or glass cup for about 1 minute.
  • Add buttermilk to melted butter and warm for about 45 seconds.
  • Add butter-buttermilk mixture to dry ingredients.
  • Lightly whisk the eggs in a small bowl and add to mixing bowl.
  • Turn mixer on low speed and knead dough for about 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Remove dough, spray a large bowl with cooking spray, and place the dough inside.
  • Cover bowl with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 2 to 2.5 hours.
  • Line a 9×13 pan with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray.

Roll Out the Dough & Fill

  • Once risen, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface.
  • Roll dough to approximately 26 by 13 inches.
  • Spread butter over dough leaving a ½-inch margin.
  • Smooth marmalade over the dough, followed by sprinkling the brown sugar.
  • Roll the dough from long edge into a log, seam side down.
  • Make small hash marks to cut 20 equal rolls.
  • Slice the rolls using unwaxed dental floss and arrange in the pan.
  • Let rolls rise in a warm place until nearly doubled, about 1 hour.

Bake the Orange Rolls

  • Preheat oven to 375F and bake rolls for about 15 minutes.
  • Watch the rolls closely to not overbake.

Make the Orange Glaze

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together orange juice, vanilla, confectioners’ sugar, salt.
  • Drizzle in milk to desired consistency.
  • Whisk in 2 teaspoons orange zest and set aside.
  • Pour glaze over rolls and sprinkle with remaining zest.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

To make the rolls the night before, refrigerate the unrisen sliced rolls. Let rise until doubled before baking.
